Departmental Vision and Mission
Vision:
Determined Inquirers, Disciplined Seekers
Mission:
To develop Dunearnites into determined inquirers and disciplined seekers who pursue scientific knowledge with curiosity and rigour. Guided by scientific values and the discipline of science, we aim to nurture students to think critically and contribute responsibly to the world around them.
Overview:
Guided by inquiry-based learning, Assessment for Learning, and purposeful questioning, the Science Department aims to develop students who are curious about the science behind everyday phenomena and determined to actively seek deeper understanding. Through student-centred learning experiences, teachers build critical thinking and scientific literacy, with educational technology integrated to extend curiosity and learning beyond the classroom.
The Science Ambassadors Programme (SAP) nurtures students with a strong interest in STEM and environmental sustainability. Through experiences such as DNA Forensic Science workshops, the Health and Food Science Challenge, and the annual Science and Environment Week, SAP students develop leadership, adaptive thinking, and passion for environmental stewardship. The Vertical Farming project further connects scientific learning to real-world impact, fostering empathy and community spirit as students contribute meaningfully to a sustainable Singapore.
Green School Award
In line with our commitment to sustainability, Dunearn Secondary School is proud to be recognised under the School Green Award, administered by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC). Each year, the SEC receives more than 300 submissions from a wide range of educational institutions, and the Vanda Miss Joaquim Award is presented to schools that achieve an overall score of more than 90 % in the assessment.
Our school's achievements reflect years of sustained effort and dedication:
2022 & 2025: Vanda Miss Joaquim Sustained Achievement Award — the highest tier of recognition, presented to schools that have achieved the Vanda Miss Joaquim Award for three consecutive years
2024: Vanda Miss Joaquim Award
2023: Yellow Flame Award
At Dunearn Secondary School, our environmental programmes and school-wide initiatives nurture students to develop positive environmental habits, take ownership of sustainability efforts, and engage the wider community in caring for the environment. We are proud of our students and staff for their continued commitment to building a greener and more sustainable school community.
