The Aesthetics Department provides students with opportunities to Explore, eXperience, Create and InnovaTE (EXCITE!) through Art, Design & Technology (D&T), Nutrition & Food Science (NFS) and Music.

Through meaningful and authentic experiences, we nurture curious, creative, collaborative and reflective learners who are confident in applying their knowledge and skills in different contexts.

Learning Beyond Classroom

Our curriculum is designed around inquiry, creativity and authentic learning.

Students build disciplinary knowledge and practical skills while learning to question, investigate, experiment, create and reflect. Across Art, D&T, FCE & NFS and Music, learning experiences develop key 21st Century Competencies (21CC) including:

•        Critical, Adaptive and Inventive Thinking 

•        Communication and Collaboration 

•        Information and Digital Literacy 

•        Self-Directed Learning 

•        Awareness of different perspectives and contexts

 Students are encouraged to connect their learning to real-world situations and take increasing ownership of their learning.          

Learning Journeys provide students with opportunities to deepen their understanding of sustainability through authentic experiences, including the Semula Plastic visit by the NFS Unit and the Siloso Beach Resort Sustainability Tour by the D&T Unit.

ART with heART Programme. Through artmaking, befriending and collaborative mural experiences, students use creativity to engage the community, share stories and bring messages of gratitude, kindness and hope to life.

Curiosity Starts the Learning

Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) is at the heart of teaching and learning in Aesthetics subjects.

Students are encouraged to:

• ask questions and explore possibilities; 

• investigate ideas, information, materials and processes; 

• experiment, prototype, create and perform; 

• collaborate and communicate their thinking; and 

• reflect, respond to feedback and refine their work. 

Teachers support this through a balance of explicit instruction, guided inquiry and student-directed exploration.

From Curiosity to Creation

Art

Students investigate ideas, artists and visual culture through experimentation, art making and reflection, developing their own creative voice.

Design & Technology

Students use Design Thinking to identify needs, generate possibilities, prototype, test and refine meaningful solutions.

Nutrition & Food Science

Students investigate food, nutrition and consumer needs through practical experiences, informed decision-making and problem-solving.

Music

Students learn through listening, creating, performing and responding, while using digital technologies to support musical exploration and collaboration.

Making Learning Visible

Assessment is not only about the final product. It is an important part of the learning journey.

Through Assessment for Learning, Assessment as Learning and Assessment of Learning, students develop a clearer understanding of their progress and next steps through:

• clear learning intentions and success criteria; 

• ongoing feedback and feedforward; 

• self- and peer assessment; 

• teacher observation and conferencing; 

• rubric and criteria-referenced assessment; 

• authentic and performance-based tasks; and 

• portfolios and process documentation. 

The emphasis is on growth, reflection and improvement, helping students become increasingly confident and independent learners.

From Ideas to Possibilities

Through Aesthetics subjects, students learn to inquire, imagine, create, collaborate and reflect, developing the confidence and capabilities to transform ideas into meaningful outcomes.

Chia Ho Cheng Gary participated in the SYF Youth Station Project, performing his original song, Hazel Eyes, at the Esplanade. The opportunity marked an exciting milestone in his development as a young musician, showcasing his creativity, songwriting and confidence on stage.

Secondary 3 D&T students participated in the GenVision Challenge 2026, organised by Republic Polytechnic's School of Engineering in collaboration with Autodesk. Using generative design and AIenabled tools to address real-world problems, the team proudly emerged as Champions.

Secondary 3 NFS students put their culinary knowledge and creativity into action through the Keat Hong CC Sandwich Making Competition, developing innovative and creative sandwich creations.

Art students participated in MOH's Live On Design Challenge, where they used visual communication to raise awareness of organ donation
