2024 Secondary 2 Immersion and Exchange Programme to Hong Kong

SECONDARY TWO STUDENTS’ IMMERSION AND EXCHANGE PROGRAMME TO HONG KONG

From November 4th to November 8th, 2024, a group of selected Secondary Two students embarked on an unforgettable school trip to Hong Kong. This journey offered not only a break from the usual classroom setting but also unique educational experiences, cultural exposure, and hands-on learning.

The itinerary was filled with diverse activities, including a school visit, an educational program at Disneyland Hong Kong, farm activities, and a tour of refurbished historical buildings. Each of these activities was designed to provide students with meaningful insights, encourage teamwork, and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

The first stop was a school visit to AD&FD POHL Leung Sing Tak College, where students had the opportunity to interact with local peers and also participated in activities organized by the school. This exchange allowed them to gain insight into the education system, student life, and academic culture in Hong Kong.

The students were able to observe classes through a tour of the school and engage in various collaborative activities. This experience opened their eyes to different learning styles and perspectives of another country.

Another highlight was the educational program at Disneyland Hong Kong. This unique opportunity combined entertainment with learning, making it a memorable and impactful experience. The program focused on behind-the-scenes insights into park operations, where students learned about working in Disneyland. Through interactive sessions, they also discovered important qualities required in the workplace. It was an eye-opener for students to see how Disneyland Hong Kong selects its staff and what it is like to work there.

The fourth day of the trip included a visit to an organic farm on the outskirts of Hong Kong, where students were involved in hands-on agricultural activities. They learned about sustainable farming practices, such as crop rotation, composting, and organic pest management. This hands-on experience allowed students to understand the hard work and dedication required to produce food sustainably, sparking a newfound appreciation for agriculture and environmental stewardship. As they worked together to plant and harvest crops, they developed a sense of responsibility and teamwork. They were encouraged to reflect on the importance of sustainable practices and how these could be applied in their daily lives to reduce their environmental footprint. In addition students also had the opportunity to designed tie-dye tote bags which showcased vibrant colors and unique patterns, created by folding, tying, and dyeing techniques that personalize each bag.

Another interesting activity on the itinerary was a visit to two refurbished historical buildings, The Mill and Tai Kwun where students learned about Hong Kong’s rich cultural heritage and architectural evolution. The tour provided insights into the city’s history, architectural styles, and preservation efforts. Through exploring these buildings, they recognized the significance of preserving historical sites as a way of maintaining cultural identity. The students also discussed how the buildings’ adaptive reuse allowed them to serve modern functions while respecting its heritage. This experience reinforced the importance of valuing history and inspired them to appreciate the architectural and cultural heritage in our country.

Overall, this overseas trip proved to be immensely valuable for the students. Beyond the enriching learning experiences, they gained practical knowledge and developed essential life skills such as independence, adaptability, and cross-cultural communication. This journey highlighted the benefits of experiential learning, where students learn beyond textbooks and interact with the real world. By immersing themselves in a new environment, the students not only expanded their knowledge but also gained a broader perspective on global issues and the importance of cultural diversity.

In summary, this immersion and exchange programme trip provided Secondary Two students with valuable insights, both academically and personally. Each activity reinforced different learning points, from teamwork and creativity to environmental awareness and cultural appreciation. This trip underscored the value of overseas experiences in nurturing well-rounded, open-minded, and globally aware students.
